In mid-2015, Sanmar A.S. contracted with Robert Allan Ltd., Naval Architects of Vancouver, Canada to design a “little sister” to Sanmar’s highly successful Ramparts 2400-SX “Bogacay” series tugs. The result is a compact yet powerful 22 m design designated by Robert Allan Ltd. as the RAmparts 2200 class and by Sanmar as their Sirapinar series. The first of these tugs has just completed sea trials only 16 months after signing of the design contract with Robert Allan Ltd.
The RAmparts 2200 class ASD tugs build on the success of the RAmparts 2400-SX Bogacay series, of which over 30 have been constructed, with bollard pulls ranging from 60 to 75 tonnes. The hull of the new 22 m tugs is similar to the larger 2400-SX and features standard RAmparts class characteristics. These include good dead rise for improved thruster performance, modest side flare, a half-raised forecastle deck for good sea keeping, gently rounded deck line in plan to ensure that the tug can safely and easily come alongside and remove itself from an attended ship at speed, (avoiding the “shoebox” shape of many other common tugs). Most importantly, the characteristic conically shaped double chined stern form unique to all Robert Allan Ltd. tug designs, which ensures that the tug can run astern at high speeds, and maintain good control and directional stability in all directions.
Depending on the propulsion system selected by the customer, the RAmparts 2200-SX can accommodate up to 60 tonnes bollard pull and is ideal for low-manning operations due to the high standard of machinery automation fitted by Sanmar.

Robert Allan Ltd. designed the RAmparts 2200-SX to comply with the Rules of all the major classification societies. Sanmar has constructed the first vessel, Sirapinar I to RINA class requirements with the following notation:

Propulsion and auxiliary machinery consists of:
Ship-handling fenders at the bow consist of an upper row of 800 mm diameter cylindrical fender and a lower course of W-fender. Sheer fendering consists of 300 mm D rubber. “W” block type fendering, 300 mm high, is fitted at the stern.
The accommodations of the RAmparts 2200-SX can be adjusted to match almost any reasonable requirement. The first vessel off the line has been outfitted to a high MLC compliant standard for a crew of six. The main deckhouse contains an entrance lobby, the galley, mess, one officer cabin with ensuite WC, and a laundry. The lower deck contains two double berth cabins with shared ensuite WC and one single office cabin with ensuite WC. The wheelhouse is designed with a single split control station which provides maximum all round visibility and exceptional visibility to the bow and side fendering. The engine room features a small, acoustically isolated switchboard room.
On trials, the Sirapinar I met or exceeded all performance expectations, with the following results:
Sirapinar I has already been sold, as are Sirapinar II and Sirapinar III even though they are not scheduled for delivery until 2nd quarter 2017.
Even at this early stage it seems certain that the RAmparts 2200-SX/Sirapinar series are destined to follow in the wake of their bigger sister and become another highly desirable and popular tug from the Robert Allan Ltd.- Sanmar team.
